The Dr. Rose Butler Browne Fund for Education

At

Olney Street

Baptist Church

In 1990, the Olney Street Baptist Church Fund for Education was established in response to a recommendation brought before the church by Dr. H. Lincoln Oliver, Pastor. As young people of the Olney Street Baptist Church pursued their desire in furthering their education, the Fund was to be utilized in supporting financial aid. Originally called the Fund for Education, the Fund was renamed in honor of Dr. Rose Butler Browne.

Dr. Rose Butler Browne was born in Boston, MA in 1897. She moved with her family to Newport, RI where she grew up. While working as a live-in domestic, she earned a Bachelor’s Degree at RI State College. She went on to earn her Master’s Degree at RI College and then to Harvard University where, in 1939 she became the first Black woman to earn a Doctoral Degree in Education. In 1950, she received an Honorary Degree from RI College. On September 29, 1969, a seven story RI College residence hall was dedicated in her honor. It was named Browne Residence Hall.

Dr. Browne was Director of Religious Education at the Olney Street Baptist Church. She also coordinated the Second Hour Program.

On the 2 nd Sunday of every month, a special offering is taken up at Olney Street Baptist Church during the 11 am Worship Service.
